History

1945

Production is taken up in the French sector of the Berlin district of Reinickendorf, beginning with body care cosmetics, at first sold only regionally.

In the same year the first theatrical make-up with the new name KRYOLAN comes on the market and is delivered to the reopened Berlin theaters.

1947

A branch office is established in the then Soviet sector.

1950

At first confiscation of the affiliated branch in East Berlin by the Communist authorities. Continuation of business activities by the branch operation as independent company under the new name Coloran.

First acquisition attempts in the neighbor countries of France, Netherlands, Switzerland and Austria.

1962

Takeover of the competing firm Brändel GmbH as of 1st January 1962. The purchase has synergy effects in the product range, sales structure and production as a consequence, contributing to the significantly stronger growth and market acceptance of the new KRYOLAN trademark BRÄNDEL.

1969

Premiere of the specialized information for makeup-design from KRYOLAN titled “lebendige Maske”. The publication has been regularly issued ever since.

1971

After 26 years of doing business in the Reinickendorf Provinzstrasse, the company moves into its own new building in the Papierstrasse.

First contacts are made over the Atlantic. A new market begins to open up: USA

1976

Establishment of the first foreign subsidiary, the KRYOLAN Corp. in Van Nuys, California.

In response to customer encouragement and after intense development work, the production of so-called cosmetic camouflage (make-up to cover skin color anomalies) is taken up under the registered trademark “DERMACOLOR”.

At first the program includes 12 natural skin colors of DERMACOLOR cream and four shades of a special setting powder.

1976-1981

The export share grows to 60%. In the meantime, aside from Europe, South Africa and South America are included in the sales region.

The number of employees rises to 36.

1981

Relocation and enlargement of the business activities of the KRYOLAN Corporation. New home office of the subsidiary company: San Francisco.

The camouflage sector develops well merely by word-of-mouth propaganda. DERMACOLOR products are already sold in 9 different countries, with especially high demand in Australia.

1982

KRYOLAN hosts the 1st International Make-up Artist Seminar in Berlin.

150 participants from 20 countries make the training event a huge success. From now on this seminar is offered repeatedly.

1983

Australia and New Zealand join the list of new foreign markets for KRYOLAN products.

1986

The year is characterized by the first promising foreign contacts to Asia. The initial Asian sales partner is Cosmoprof in Singapore, still today our sales partner for Singapore and Malaysia.

1987

Our business activities in the USA have developed positively in the past years. In order to adapt production capacity to the market, a building is purchased as new company domicile for the US subsidiary in a central location of San Francisco.

1992

Takeover of Charles H. Fox Ltd., London and continuation of the company as 100% subsidiary. Fox Ltd. is responsible for the sales of KRYOLAN products in the United Kingdom.

1993

Founding of KRYOLAN Poland Ltd. in Stettin and commissioning of the manufacturing plant there.

1995

50 years KRYOLAN

A total workforce of 120 is now employed in 4 plants. KRYOLAN theatrical makeup products are sold to 5 continents.

The further development of KRYOLAN is marked by the expansion of the production program to include the fields of camouflage and ornamental cosmetics. These areas have their origin at the company dating back to 1976.

1998

After one year of construction, the central warehouse in Zehlendorf, located in Oberhavel county north of Berlin, is taken into in operation. The warehouse is erected on a 9000 m2 piece of property and has a capacity of 1000 Euro palettes, as well as workrooms for the production of spray materials for printing cosmetic packaging materials.

2000

A production plant is founded in Bangladesh to manufacture cosmetic accessories, and commissioned in the Dhaka Export Processing Zone.

2003

KRYOLAN Poland celebrates its 10th company anniversary. The Polish subsidiary has developed into a significant factor in the company group, and now employs 45 people at the Stettin site.

2004

In May KRYOLAN hosts the 1st Make-up Artist Forum, where the professional concerns of the German-speaking make-up artist are discussed and job prospects debated.

In August the 28th Olympic Games are held in the Greek capital of Athens. So the Games return to their origin where they once started. KRYOLAN does the make-up of the 4000 actors for the one-of-a-kind opening ceremony. Especially for this event KRYOLAN developed a unique make-up which meets the extreme weather conditions.

At the end of the year yet another company expansion is completed at the Berlin site, completed after overcoming massive bureaucratic objections. Another 1000 m2 of state-of-the-art production and storage facilities is established over 4 floors.

2005

Arnold Langer is awarded the prize “A Life of Beauty” for his lifetime professional achievements at the Beauty International trade fair in Düsseldorf, Germany.

60 years KRYOLAN

KRYOLAN Cosmetics (India) P. Ltd. begins activities in the South Indian city Chennai (Madras).

In the meantime KRYOLAN operates 7 of its own sites in 6 countries. A total workforce of more than 200 is now employed in the company group.

2006

This summer the FIFA World Cup is hosted in Germany under the motto “a time to make friends”. Due to this reason KRYOLAN developed FAN-Make-up under license.

The fashion show CPD Düsseldorf which presents wearable fashion is supported by a selected team of international Make-up Artists from KRYOLAN under the supervision of JOS BRANDS and DOMINIC CRUZ. KRYOLAN is exclusively responsible for the make-up at this show and will also be in the upcoming shows.

KRYOLAN presents the 1st multicultural symposium of professional design make-up at the technical university in Berlin. 120 Make-up Artists follow with a lot of interest this unique seminar. Global Face Art is born.

2007

Launching of KRYOLAN’s newest product innovation. High Definition. KRYOLAN developed a special make-up range for the new high-resolution camera technology which meets the requirements.

For the first time the KRYOLAN Make-up Artist Team is exclusively responsible for the make-up at the world’s largest shoe fashion show GDS in Düsseldorf this September. KRYOLAN will be also responsible in the upcoming shows.

In the same month KRYOLAN will be participating with its Make-up Artist Team for the first time the famous fashion show Prêt à Porter in Paris.

2008

In October the first Kryolan make-up academy in cooperation with the Hasso von Hugo Make-up Artist School was launched under the designation Kryolan Mephisto Professional Make-up Academy in Chennai, India.

At the end of the same month Kryolan conducted its traditional and meanwhile the 3rd multicultural symposium of professional design make-up the Global Face Art in Milan, Italy.

In late November, Kryolan moved its logistics operations to a new warehouse location in Zehlendorf, in the German state of Brandenburg (near Berlin). The new warehouse has a storage capacity of 5,500 palettes slots on around 5,000m² of floor space.

2009

KRYOLAN sponsored all make-up products exclusively for the film “Pope Joan”.  Responsible as head of the make-up department was Hasso von Hugo.

For the first time, KRYOLAN Professional Make-up was the official Cosmetics Partner for the most important beauty pageant of the world - Miss Universe® 2009. The KRYOLAN International Make-up Artist Team was responsible for making up the contestants, and for exclusively providing the make-up itself.

The make-up artist Madhav Kadam received an IIFA Award for his work in the film “Jodhaa Akbar.” An additional award was waiting for Madhav Kadam. During the annual convention of Bollywood make-up artists in Mumbai, Madhav Kadam was honored in recognition of his services from KRYOLAN.
